Using rain water to replenish ground water levels

Ground water levels in most parts of India are going down at fast rates. In the state of Karnataka there is a case of an individual using rain water to replenish the levels of ground water. Here is a video in Tamil that describes the process he uses :
Rain water is basically diverted to a deep pit. The water in the pit slowly seeps into the surrounding earth, in the process replenishing the levels of ground water.
